36 Points But Who’s Counting
Just scored 36 points for my afternoon on the golf course. 36 big one’s for all my hard work on and around the greens. Thirty six Stableford points means shooting your allotted handicap on the day for those not in the know. It means I can walk tall for the rest of the week rather than feel small for failing. This is the funny thing about golf and its strictures within clubland. We toil and do battle with ourselves and the course in a bid to reach parity and possibly glory. A pass mark is 36 points but who’s counting.

How Do I Tell Him or Her?
You know that whatever you say will be taken the wrong way. You can sense the bristly welcome in your partner’s mien. You, also, know that it is the right thing to do. BUT…Just don’t shoot the messenger Bro! This is not a case of telling your best friend that their wife or husband is sleeping with someone else but it can sometimes feel like that. How do I tell him or her that they’re swinging way too fast and getting it all wrong? We have all had that experience out on the golf course when observing your playing partner is like watching a train wreck at close hand.

Why Read Books?
Why read books? Why would you read a golf book? I mean, golf is an experiential activity and not an intellectual or theoretical one. I agree that the best way to get better at golf is to play. Nothing teaches like experience in my view. However, if you do not naturally gravitate toward finding effective solutions via your golf swing, then, a series of lessons with a PGA teaching professional is highly recommended. In addition, if you are like me and you really love the game, then, reading a few quality golf books can be both a pleasurable pastime and a useful thing to do.

Imagine If Everyone In The World Played Golf
Imagine if everyone in the world played golf. Yes, we would need a lot more golf courses. However, as this is just imagining let’s say that is taken care of. If everyone was working on improving their handicap and getting better at the game the place would be an altogether different kettle of fish. Let us say that the majority of folks walked the course. This would make all of us a whole lot healthier, both physically and mentally. Less sitting around on fat bums and more exercise in the great outdoors. Human beings would be, dare I say, happier within themselves from taking those several hours a week to breathe fresh air and swing.

Praise does not come any richer than this from golf’s all time greatest major winner. Australia’s Cameron Smith is now being recognised as one of the leading players in the world of golf. In a season where he won the Players’ and the Tournament of Champions, he would normally be player of the year. However Scottie Scheffler has won 5 times, including a major at the masters.

AFL Umpiring Directives Ruining Our Game
Watching the Friday night game between Carlton and the Swans it was hard not to think that AFL umpiring directives are ruining our game. The protect the head mantra has gone way overboard in this lifelong fan’s opinion. The games have 3 field umpires policing play and the number of tiggy touchwood decisions are numerous and overly influential. The inconsistencies are legion in most matches I observe. AFL is a physically challenging game and one I played myself as a junior. This aspect of the game is one of its most endearing features. The holding the ball rule is a travesty, with each umpire interpreting it differently in a single match.

The USA PGA Championship Won By Justin Thomas
Is there any game crueller than golf? Watching Mito Pereira double bogie the 72nd hole of a major championship to miss a playoff by one shot rammed home the answer in the negative. Golf is a hard taskmaster and a cruel mistress in no uncertain terms. The USA PGA Championship was won by Justin Thomas following a 3 hole aggregate playoff against Will Zalatoris. Thomas was a deserving winner make no mistake on that score. Mito, however, had led the tournament all day until the final hole and for much of the 3 previous days. It will be a bitter pill for the Chilean to swallow but he has every reason to be proud of his achievements.

Southern Hills Sand Struggles in the PGA Championship
It has been interesting to see the tour pros and their Southern Hills sand struggles in the PGA Championship. It reminds me of what I see at clubland in the Saturday comp. Apparently the granular nature of this yellow river sand with its many pebbles is messing with their ability to generate any spin from the traps. Many of these world best touring professionals have been unable to adjust their game to this new challenge on day one. Adam Scott had an absolute shocker from a greenside bunker which ended up miles away and almost in the hazard. Adam double bogied this hole and things went further south from there in his opening round.
