What Is Golf?

What is golf? It is a vicious arrangement where nature takes its revenge on hapless human beings for seemingly no reason but to get its kicks. Talk about passive aggressive. Golf is a game (LOL). In this game you have 18 holes artfully plotted over an area of land. On this land there are a number of hazards or penalty areas. These may include bodies of water, wild bushland, and desert like sand traps. The aim of the game is to get a small white ball from one end of a strip of land to the other, where a small hole is located. This hole is demarked by a flag on the end of a thin pole.

There are not many other sporting contests where you will witness such scenes. The Ryder Cup rumble in Rome is one of those rare sporting events where everything is on the table for all to see. Do Australian Golfers Lack Competitive Steel?

4 mins 2 yrs

Do our professional golfers have less of the right stuff than their American counterparts? Do Australian golfers lack competitive steel when it matters most? Watching the recent Presidents Cup and looking at past records in this event the evidence indicates that this may be so. The game of golf comes down to making putts and the Americans get it done on the greens. Getting that little white ball in the hole is what winning is all about in golf. Big drives are great but if you can’t get it done on the greens you are playing for second place.

Foursome Failure: Format of Disaster in Golf

The foursome format in golf is a tough gig to master and a frequent recipe for disaster. Watching Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama on the first day of the President’s Cup brought that back in spades. The alternate shot format can be an awful experience when things go wrong. Foursome failure: Format of disaster in golf. It is almost impossible to get any rhythm into your game, especially with the driver off the tee. Scott and Matsuyama were supposed to get the away team off to a solid start. The experienced duo were chosen to lead for this reason. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele were a deadly combo on the greens and from the fairway.

The Church of Golf

Here at the Church of Golf we take all comers. We take sinners of many colours. You might be a chilli dipper or a shanker. You may even be a hooker or a slicer. We don’t care what your particular crime against golf is – cause there is a place for you here. We offer salvation from the lonely path they call the bogey trail. We provide succour for the sinner who is way over par. The Church of Golf was built for the man and woman who is woe betide on that scorecard. The golfer who hath lost his or her way and requires the charity of the brethren of swingers. Ye shall not walk the course alone. Ye shall not suffer the indignities of failure without the helping hand of brother or sister. Golfers of the world unite under the banner of the crossed clubs and dimpled ball. That flapping flag up yonder beckons to us all. The sweet perfume of promised birdies in the paradise of tomorrow. The soaring drive that clears the trees to land so softly upon the Lord’s fairway. The rolling putt that drops unexpectedly from long range. These are the treasures inherent within the crucible if we can all just last the distance and turn the corner on our next round. Golf was never said to be easy. Golf was from the very beginning more challenging than any other activity of its kind. The game of golf – and is it really just a game – demands a great deal from its participants and adherents. Eighteen holes in which to do your best somehow. What is the significance of the number 18? Why did God choose to have 18 holes, with 18 greens and 18 tees? Two sets of 9 add up to 18. Each 9 holes is a journey out in one direction. An expedition or adventure we all embark upon with hope in our hearts. Hope for the lightness of grace to fall upon our shoulders. That the round ahead may be touched by divinity or good fortune at the very least.

Becoming Robby The Robot: A Golfer’s Journey

It seems, that I am transitioning from mere human to robotoid – an enhanced version of me. Becoming Robby the Robot: A golfer’s journey from fallible flesh to digital design. My golfing arsenal now contains so many technological devices that I am questioning my humanity. The most recent acquisition is the Shot Scope H4 and it may well have tipped me over the edge. It joins my hand held laser, my Phantom GPS, and the MiScore app on my phone. Some folks might mention the term ‘overkill’ here but I find each of these devices offers something unique, as well as their shared abilities.

How You Feel Affects Your Golf Swing

You hold the club and how you swing it determines the trajectory and pathway of your golf ball. Therefore, how you feel affects your golf swing and what kind of shape you are in massively affects your golf shots. We all bemoan how inconsistent most of us are at the great game of golf. Many of the golfers I regularly play with share their frustrations at not being able to make the shots they know they can when out on the course. Golf is a thick soup of experiences, which bubbles on the stove for over four hours. There are high points and low moments during our rounds of golf. At times, the game seems almost effortless and at others it is a dire struggle. The evidence indicates that the common denominator is the guy or gal holding the golf club. Our state of being impacts upon how we play a shot and the outcome of that shot.

Donald Trump Cheats At Golf

The fact that Donald Trump cheats at golf may come as no big surprise for those unfamiliar with the game. But for real golfers, those of us who bleed green and chew grass when we get hungry, there is nothing lower and more despicable than cheating at golf. If you garner a reputation as a cheater in clubland golf nobody wants to play with you. If there is the merest sniff of doubt about your adherence to the rules of golf, then, plenty of folks will cross the room to avoid your company in the clubhouse. Golf is all about the rules. ‘Play it as it lies’ is the fundamental ethos underpinning the game of golf.

Say No To Slow Play

Join us in our campaign to minimise slow play in golf. This scourge of golf courses everywhere needs to be met head on. What can we all do about ending slow play and its miserable impact upon the enjoyment of our golf? We can each remain vigilant in our duty to keep the game moving along. Firstly, keep up with the group in front and if you fall behind make an effort to catch up. It is our responsibility, as players and as members of a four ball, to maintain the pace of play despite delays looking for lost balls. If you fall behind speed up and catch up pronto.

Saudi Arabia Sentences Young Girl To 38 Years For Tweeting

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has just incarcerated a young female student for 38 years for Tweeting. Yes, the backers of the LIV tour, Greg Norman’s baby, gaol people for using social media. Saudi Arabia sentences young girl to 38 years for Tweeting. The young woman involved was speaking out on Twitter for women’s rights in the heavily censored and undemocratic fiefdom of the Saudi royal family. Earlier we reported that the Saudi regime had executed 81 human beings in one day for ‘so-called’ crimes against the state. Golfers around the world cannot ignore these horrendous injustices and this corrupt autocratic regime. Golf is a game built on integrity and fairness.

Golf and That Winning Feeling

I had a solid 5 and 4 win this week in my pennants match against a fairly well matched opponent handicap-wise. I invariably come away feeling pretty good about it and thinking better of my game. Golf and that winning feeling are all too rare but wonderful when they coincide. Yes, for a few days one can muse upon the idea that one is not such a bad golfer after all. Of course it doesn’t last long, indeed, once I tee it up again and fall short of the 36 points I will soon be put straight on the facts of the matter and current reality will find me short of the mark. Golf is a tough task master or mistress and victories are far and few between in the main.

What Stops Us From Playing Our Best Golf?

Why do we falter at golf? What stops us from playing our best golf? Why do we fail to execute shots we know we can hit? Now, I am not talking about those miracle shot attempts but the stock standard stuff like pitching, chipping, and straight forward short putts. Why do we fluctuate so much in our abilities to play steady golf? This unreliability is what makes the game of golf so infuriating and maddening to us amateurs and hackers. Is it too much to expect that we can strike a small, dimpled sphere reasonably straight toward a pretty generous target? The evidence, in my own experience of late, suggests it may well be.
