Young Women On His Operating Table Were Cash Cows

I have rarely been so angry as I was watching Four Corners the other night. The ABC investigatory programme exposed a Victorian surgeon, Simon Gordon, who was allegedly operating on patients in a fraudulent manner. This gynaecological surgeon was shown to have operated falsely and needlessly, repeatedly and on multiple occasions on scores of young women. I would say that a number of the young women on his operating table were his cash cows. His claims that they were suffering from endometriosis was exposed in multiple cases to be false, as the pathology reports indicated no endometriosis present.

Victorian Gynaecological Surgeon Cutting For Medicare Cash

Why would a surgeon operate on someone when the pathology report indicates zero presence of the condition for which the surgery is being performed? Money. Medicare payments in the thousands of dollars adding up to hundreds of thousands and, even, millions of dollars. Simon Gordon was allegedly performing unnecessary surgeries, for which there were no pathological reasons for. It amazes me that in our medical system, and in this instance it was the private health system at Epworth hospital, there are no checks and balances in place to stop this rorting.

He Billed For Surgeries To Remove Heavy Endometriosis When None Was Present

Simon Gordon operated on one young woman 7 times! He cut out so much tissue in laparoscopies that he then removed both ovaries and finally her uterus. Examination of the pathology reports post-surgeries show that this patient had no endometriosis present prior to these surgeries. My blood was boiling as I watched this expose of this horrendous misuse of power and exploitation of a young woman. I am aware of a culture among surgeons, a boy’s club if you like, that demeans women and their pain complaints. Surgery has long been largely a male domain within the medical establishment. This elitist world prides itself on its wealth and power at the top of the hierarchical tree. The Four Corners programme interviewed a few female gynaecological surgeons who said that were often afraid to speak out within this culture. Misogyny rears its very ugly head here among a section of our society which professes to be in the healing business. Unfortunately, they are much more business orientated than anything else, it seems.

“A renowned Melbourne surgeon repeatedly removed tissue and organs from young women for “severe” endometriosis when pathology showed they had little or no trace of the disease, prompting multiple complaints by clinicians and patients to hospital management and medical regulators, a seven-month Four Corners investigation has found.”

The Misogyny Of Male Surgeons

There are jokes in the profession about what it does to you looking at cunts all day. This black humour conveys the misogyny present within this speciality of the medical profession. It has always disturbed me the presumptuousness of men operating on genitalia that they themselves do not possess and posturing that they know best about this stuff. Surgeons still behave culturally as if they are operating in the 19^th or 20^th centuries. Their colleges of surgeons and male dominated hierarchies are anachronisms designed to protect the status of powerful men. It is well overdue for real change in these gilded institutions. Specialist surgeons hiding behind white lab coats and lording it over impressionable young women. The power imbalance is huge and the system offers no checks and balances, which actually work.

“ ‘A lot of the care, clinical guidelines, a lot of the symptomology that you look for, a lot of those care plans that doctors rely on, even women doctors, are just about men,’ she said.  
‘[Women] feel dismissed, they don’t feel heard, they get under-medicated, they get told, and I dare to use this word, that they could be hysterical, that they’re overdramatising.  
‘Or even worse that, well, pain is just a woman’s lot – you just have to put up with it.’  
Gender bias continues to be commonplace in healthcare across the world, and historically, medical research has often excluded women.”

Class Action Suit?

A class action must be on the cards, as 80 former patients have come forward with complaints since the proverbial has hit the fan for this prominent Victorian surgeon. Epworth hospital and its repeated failings must be in the crosshairs for legal action as well. It is shocking that this kind of thing is still going on right under our noses in the 21C. It is time to rock the boat and put these elitist institutions under real scrutiny. Scumbags professing to be champions of women’s pain – does it get any lower or more vile than that? The blatant exploitation of Medicare by medical specialists is rife and I see the American influence in this. The conferences that these professions indulge in are, like so much else in Australia, following American examples. The ruthlessness of American style capitalism embodies extreme materialism. Doctors demanding big returns for the sale of their services. 78% of all doctors in the United States are employed by corporations. Stop and have a think about that and what it means. Simon Gordon drove a Ferrari and owned multiple multi-million dollar properties in Victoria – this was revealed during the Four Corners programme. Who knows what else he owned and how much he was really worth in total. A veneer called the caring profession is inserted over this driving materialism. The neoliberalism of the last 40 years has put self-interest front and centre downunder. The young women on his operating table were his cash cows and that makes for very disturbing imagery and conclusions about how our Medicare system is being plundered by unscrupulous professionals.

Fraudsters Operating In Plain Sight

I suppose, people like President Donald Trump have shown how you can hide crimes in plain sight. Denying the truth repeatedly and resting on your status within the hierarchical system, while young women in distress are just ignored or their complaints pushed under the carpet. The evidence is there for all to see, the injustice and material exploitation, is pretty bloody blatant really. Australia has let vulnerable people down once again, as the power elite enjoy themselves at the expense of the powerless. Things like this and Robodebt make a mockery of the words of politicians telling us that we live in a fair and equitable democracy.  Tell that to these women who have had their reproductive organs cut out for money! So that surgeons can send their kids to expensive private schools and buy Ferraris.
