Pro Golfers Need To Stand Up For Human Rights

Cam Smith, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, and all the LIV Golf stars could take a leaf out of the stance taken by the World Cup Socceroos. Super rich LIV pro golfers need to stand up for human rights in the country they source their wages from – Saudi Arabia. If these Middle East nations want to be associated with elite western sports, then, their record on human rights has to be accounted for and cleaned up. Autocratic regimes that operate in contravention of the UN’s standards on human rights for women, LGBTQI+, ethnic minorities, and religious freedoms cannot be involved in world sports like golf as things currently stand.

Golf and Slavery: Its Intersection in the South

Golf is a game with a rich history of class consciousness. A game played by masters and their servants or caddies. Wealthy early golfers did not just have a single caddie to carry their bag and clubs but a forecaddie as well to spot where their golf ball landed. This is where we get the warning cry ‘fore’ from, as caddies and then players loudly announce the impending arrival of a struck golf ball. Golf originated in Scotland and then, England, but soon emigrated, as a pastime, to the new world in America and Australia. Games like golf were, in the 19C and early 20C, for those with the necessary wealth to indulge in recreational activities. The masters of these colonial times were partial to the odd spot of golf. Golf and slavery: Its intersection in the South of the United States of America was not altogether uncommon.

Imagine If Everyone In The World Played Golf

Imagine if everyone in the world played golf. Yes, we would need a lot more golf courses. However, as this is just imagining let’s say that is taken care of. If everyone was working on improving their handicap and getting better at the game the place would be an altogether different kettle of fish. Let us say that the majority of folks walked the course. This would make all of us a whole lot healthier, both physically and mentally. Less sitting around on fat bums and more exercise in the great outdoors. Human beings would be, dare I say, happier within themselves from taking those several hours a week to breathe fresh air and swing.

OMG the sky is going to fall in. In this partisan realm complaints about there being too many coloured faces on TV and LGBTQIA folk making too much noise are legion. Uppity women talking about sexual harassment and such like make their viewer’s blood boil – which is the whole idea for Fox. Getting their audience riled up keeps eyeballs on them and advertising rates going up for their revenue.Popularizing Poisonous Issues For Political GainThe politics of grievance is all about popularizing these causes for the benefit of candidates and the party. The party promoting these grievances doesn’t need positive policies. They just bang on about how the other side is to blame for the problem.
